First Family Friday in NYC

DAY 6: Friday, October 23, 2009
We were supposed to hike up to Rockefeller Center this morning to see Tim McGraw at the Today Show, but news of blustery conditions outside led to my early morning decision to stay indoors and watch good ol' Timmy on TV. By 10:00 AM, however, the wild men were ready to go. We headed south on Sixth Avenue, stopping at Starbucks for a latte and a "latte milk," Tucker's term for the coffee chain's concoctions for children (his favorite is 2% milk with a shot of vanilla), before heading east to Union Square and its open-air market. On the way, we watched a crew plant two trees on 28th Street and overheard more than one group ooh and ahh over the "twins" in my stroller. When we made it to 14th Street, Tucker wanted out of the stroller, and so I had a partner, advising me on which grapes and pumpkins to buy, tasting pears and apples, jam and cheese, and listing to the Dirty Urchins, a band that we liked enough to buy a CD. We bought apple cider and headed to the park benches to eat our lunch. Halfway through his banana, though, our trip was over. "Mommy, I need to go potty." Uh-oh. My blood pressure was beyond high as I grabbed Tucker's hand, stuffed our belongings in the stroller, and scanned the entire perimeter. Saved by Babies R'Us. I know New Yorkers hate the big box retailers, but I have never felt like a chain saved my life until this moment. After a successful potty run, and literally, we ran, we stopped by Whole Foods for a quick grocery run before heading home. The temperature seemed 10 degrees cooler, and Tucker kept asking to go home in his Jeep, so once we made it home, we stayed there until Wes arrived and the entire fam ventured out for a taxi ride to Times Square and pizza at John's. A good night for life in the city, even as we walked home with the boys on our shoulders!
