Where the Sun Rises

DAY 4: Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Today we headed out for a walk uptown with no particular destination in mind, knowing that if we headed east and north we would find plenty to do...and we did. First, we found the library, something at which to marvel, even if you have nothing to research inside. Then, we walked over to Grand Central, something else at which to marvel , even if you have nowhere to go. Tucker was entranced by the "conductor man," even though he was just conducting pedestrian traffic inside the main lobby of the terminal. We tried to watch "real" trains, but since we weren't headed out of town, we headed to the transit museum instead. I hear there's a better one--for the younger folks, at least--in Brooklyn, but this one was good enough for today. Two Thomas engines, a latte, and a mini pumpkin cheesecake from Junior's later, we headed to Barnes and Noble for the literary fix we needed after the confusion of not being able to read at the library. It seemed Thomas the Train was the theme of the day, and miraculously, we made it out with only one Halloween book featuring the friendly blue engine in our bag. Even in New York, kids will be kids, and favorites will be favorites. I guess that's why so many Americans fly to Europe, only to order a Big Mac with fries.
